Ability to choose genres to proofread using Bite-Size Edits

It would be nice if you can choose to proofread only "sci-fi" or "romance", etc.

    Facebook/Twitter Connectivity

I'd like to see use of something like Facebook Connect, or maybe a Tweet this button. I think there needs to be as few steps as possible for people to get involved in a Book Oven project. I've been able to get a decent number of people to visit my Book Oven project, but I am pretty sure none of t... more

Hi Andrew, again, a good suggestion for our list of things to do.

let people "reset" the snippet (or at least view original)

I find when editing a snippet sometimes I move the words around a bit, delete bits, then decide I need to "go back". It would be really useful to have a "reset" button - or alternatively to display the original text while you are editing, for reference.

alex, thanks for this - it makes sense, and I'd like to do it if it's feasible.

Provide some tracking so that editors can see which snipets are accepted and which aren't.

    Status: under review

Very interesting suggestion. So far we have focused mostly on giving control to project owners to manage the edits - but indeed tracking editors' success rates would be a pretty neat thing to do too ...

    please, go multi-language

I suggest going multi-language. User would be able to choose his native language to publish or proof-read. In my country (Poland) there is actually no website devoted to help writing short-stories and longer prose. Changing the user-interface language isn't that much essential (except for publici... more

    Hi John,

Thanks for your suggestion! We've always believed in being multilingual. You can actually upload content in languages other than English right now. Bite-Size Edits will very likely not work for other languages, but you should be able to upload/view/comment in just about any language you like on a computer/browser that supports unicode and unicode fonts. Do contact us if you encounter any issues, it'd be great if we could trap any problems sooner rather than later!

Let users choose display font for Bite Size Edits

    From CoriS on the forums:

Just another thought ... I wondered if the snippet window has a font-choice, or whether people will be using their default browser font. DP has a famously-ugly in-house font, which does distinguish quite well between commonly confused letters (e.g. b and h.) However, i... more

add option to edit or delete project comments.

On the project page under the list of chapters... the comments do not seem to have any method for moderation. It would be nice to be able to tidy them up or archive some of the old ones.

Hi Betsie, thanks for the comment - we will definitely be including ways to moderate annotations and comments (both at the chapter/project levels).

    Outline editor

It would be great to have a tool for managing outlines which would then turn into chapters, paragraphs, etc.

    Need URL, not frame

Want URL for each page and paragraph for sharing, pointing and discussing precisely !

    Status: started

This is a great idea! We've also thought about doing this a little later for paragraphs, seeing as we already have individual references in place. Thanks for letting us know what you would find useful!

    Recognize spaced periods as ellipses

I used three spaced periods: ". . ." as ellipses (whereas some people don't put spaces, i.e., "..."). Unfortunately, it looks like the Bite-Sized Edit sentence parser is turning my ellipses into phantom sentences consisting of ". " and whatnot.

offer tool tips on a project's permissions, or a check/uncheck all feature

The permissions are a little overwhelming on a project. Would like to be able to easily open it up for all to edit. Or at least have a better understanding of view/edit/manage and how that applies to each role. Or maybe I'm just undercaffeinated.

    Status: planned

Hi Miette, yes, we agree with you on this one! It's on our to-do list to make this better - rather than necesesarily just using tooltips, we're looking to just making the interface simpler and more obvious. Do tell us if you think there's a model out there on another website that you like, it will help us look into possible ways to make this feature easier to use.

    Allow "mark as read"

I've noticed I get a message in my inbox notifying me every time someone makes a comment on a Bite-Sized edit. Often I don't check these until I've finished reading the Bite-Sized edits, in which case I'll have already seen the comment in the message. I'd love the ability to just tick a checkbo... more

Include URL to bite-size comment in message notification

When I get a notification in my inbox that someone has left a comment on a bite-size edit, it tells me the comment and even gives me the sentence in question. However, it doesn't give any sort of URL or option to go directly to editing/approving that particular edit. Instead, I have to go back ... more

Let users edit contextual text in Bite-Size Edits

Sometimes you spot errors in the contextual text above and below the Bite-Size Edits text box, and it would be nice to be able to correct those edits. It might be possible to have an "expand" button, that makes those sentences also editable.

For the moment, I would like to leave the Bite-Size Edits contextual text as uneditable, until I can test to see whether or not being able to edit such errors helps users, or slows them down. One way of looking at it is that one is only responsible for the text that's in the edit box, and that one has to learn to let others be responsible for the contextual text. This is an important part of the collaboration, and is more an issue of culture than a 'bug' or technical problem.

Allow authors to submit chapters via email.

www.textnovel.com already have this feature. Their FAQ describes their system as follows:

When a Bite Size Edit is proposed, have a link to the original paragraph where the edit is made.

Someone proposed a couple of edits to Love Freak, Death Freak, Porn Freak that were intended to move a quotation mark up a space. But I'm not able to determine where these supposedly misplaced quotation marks. Unlike the person proposing the edit, the project owner is not able to see the preced... more

Ability to block snippets from particular users

I've noticed at least 1 user that appears to be a commercial enterprise using BSE, ok, well, i'm very happy to help out other writers, and I do comprehend the link between writers and publishers, but I'd rather not do paid editors work for them, or i'd at least like to have a choice.

I think blank lines are being treated as a snippet

I've occasionally been offered a blank snippet by BSE.

I guess this is because people are entering blank lines between paragraphs or at the start/end of the uploaded piece? These should be stripped, it's annoying for the editor but also means that a piece is broken up into more snippets and ther... more
