Let users edit contextual text in Bite-Size Edits

Sometimes you spot errors in the contextual text above and below the Bite-Size Edits text box, and it would be nice to be able to correct those edits. It might be possible to have an "expand" button, that makes those sentences also editable.

For the moment, I would like to leave the Bite-Size Edits contextual text as uneditable, until I can test to see whether or not being able to edit such errors helps users, or slows them down. One way of looking at it is that one is only responsible for the text that's in the edit box, and that one has to learn to let others be responsible for the contextual text. This is an important part of the collaboration, and is more an issue of culture than a 'bug' or technical problem.

Allow authors to submit chapters via email.

www.textnovel.com already have this feature. Their FAQ describes their system as follows:

"• The subject line must have the following format: Story Code:chapter number
If the story code is 12 and the chapter number is 2, then the subject line should read 12:2. If you want to add a new chapt... more

When a Bite Size Edit is proposed, have a link to the original paragraph where the edit is made.

Someone proposed a couple of edits to Love Freak, Death Freak, Porn Freak that were intended to move a quotation mark up a space. But I'm not able to determine where these supposedly misplaced quotation marks. Unlike the person proposing the edit, the project owner is not able to see the preced... more

Thanks for the suggestion David, we are working on improving the Bite-Size "review" as seen by the project owner, will definitely take this into account.

Have a way to flag a snippet

I love the UI that lets me scroll quickly through all the pending edits for approval, but I have had some good comments that I want to go back to for higher-level edits. It would be great to be able to flag/tag a snippet (ie "Plot point" "Character issue" etc).

put a thumbs up sign for I like the way you wrote this.

Sometimes the sentence is not just right, but it is beautifully written. I think a thumbs up sign with the word Like could count how many editors liked it.

    Create a mobile-friendly theme

Maybe the theme isn't loading on my ancient non-3G iphone, or maybe your theme just isn't rendering well. Either way, it's basically unreadable on my iphone. Is this just me? Can send screenshots, but I'd love to be able to edit in my sleep.

Ability to block snippets from particular users

I've noticed at least 1 user that appears to be a commercial enterprise using BSE, ok, well, i'm very happy to help out other writers, and I do comprehend the link between writers and publishers, but I'd rather not do paid editors work for them, or i'd at least like to have a choice.

    In the same... more

yes, we've talked about flagging bad edits in the system, but a bit more control to stop seeing stuff you don't want makes lots of sense.

I think blank lines are being treated as a snippet

I've occasionally been offered a blank snippet by BSE.

I guess this is because people are entering blank lines between paragraphs or at the start/end of the uploaded piece? These should be stripped, it's annoying for the editor but also means that a piece is broken up into more snippets and ther... more

thanks ziz, we have a bit work to do on text processing, and this should certainly be part of it.

    Retrieve last snippet

A way to go back to the snippet one just approved -- and only then spotted a mistake in.

    Status: under review

This is something we've been asked for by some of our early users, but I'd like to do some usability testing before we do this.

Eventually, authors will be able to have each snippet seen multiple times, so it won't matter in the grand scheme of things if you miss a mistake in a snippet you've just approved because someone else will catch it. Being able to go back to earlier snippets may turn out not to be as helpful as it might seem because it may lower people's accuracy if they know they can go back and correct their corrections, and equally, knowing that you have to get it right first time may help hone people's concentration! This is something I'd like to find a way to properly test so that we know that the functionality we're building has the best effect on the way people proof read.

Hey Chris, Our dev server is really slow (its a VM, among other things) ... so latency should be improved when we go live.

But we'll look at making that snappier some way or other ...

add spell check to the editor

or maybe it's already there but just hard to find? Thanks =)

    Status: under review

Thanks for this - We don't have a spell-checker yet (though your browser might). Agreed, it's something we'd like to consider.

    Enlarge the Annotation Box

The annotation box is Book Oven is narrow, requiring more scrolling than is necessary. If you'd just widen the box to have a left margin the same width as the original text it would make things easier.

tell me why i am proofreading in BSE

    From Doug Kaye:
"One that that isn't clear: When I'm proofreading, there's nothing that explains *why* I'm doing it and to what purpose my edits will be put. Maybe it's there and I just didn't see it. I jumped right into editing. No RTFM for me! For example, why am I proofing War & Peace... more

Hi Doug, thanks for your feedback - this is an important perspective for us to consider and present better on BSE. Currently we are alpha testing BSE with some Project Gutenberg texts, as well as some live, public projects that are already in the Book Oven. We believe it will get more interesting over time as there's more content in the Book Oven itself that's exposed to Bite-Size Edits.

    Limit The Size of Submissions

Next Page button covers link to a chapter

If you have more than 16 chapters the next page button covers the chapter links, making chapter 17 unclickable.
