    More Game-Like Bite-Sized Edits

Bite-Sized Edits is a great concept, and Book Oven should push this further. The high score list is great, but I'd love to see more graphical rewards as well. Maybe things similar to Forum badges and such or achievements like on Xbox Live. People could get even more points based on if the author ... more

    Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the great ideas here -- we've always thought that Bite-Size Edits has great potential but being such a new thing, we wanted to see how people would react to it first.

We hesitated about showing a full high score list because the goal of Bite-Size Edit is primarily collaborative -- "we help each other out" -- rather than a straight-out competition.

I think we can also do more to show the "helping each other" relationship -- and things like giving karma points as you described -- based on how often your edits are accepted.

Move Bite-Size Edits buttons below the text box

Miette suggested: -- with usability, I'd recommend moving the approve/skip/suggest buttons below all the text. The eye goes down vertically, makes edit, then has to search back to the top to locate buttons

Add a leaderboard for individual projects

    FROM DAVID N:
Just as you have the Scoreboard for overall proofreading, I would suggest having a Scoreboard for each project where everyone could see who has done how many Bite Size Edits for that project. I think people would be much more generous with their time if they knew that they would, i... more

Let authors define their own house style

Tom Hughes-Croucher suggested that we allow authors to define their own house style, e.g. styling for bulletted lists, quotes, which the system can then automatically apply to the text. So long as the text is properly marked-up, the author/editors could then tweak house style and have it applied ... more

I just created a project, I gave a title and description. But I did not add content to the project on the spot.
When I logged in again to add the content, I received this message :

have authors identify which English they are writing in

I'd like to offer editing ideas but I need to first know if the author is using Canadian spelling, British spelling or American. Perhaps, authors can select a few pre-determined fields before submitting their content such as language.

You can now leave information for proofreaders through an "open" field that's on your project page, in the right column under where you manage your team. They will see your guidelines when they see Bite-Sizes from your project.

It's not quite a list that you can tick off, because we realised that there are things to consider than "spellings". For the moment, we have created the ability for the author to simply provide their guidelines.

    create different reading views

After editing a chapter, we are automatically flipped back to the reading view of the project. This view seems to be really slow in loading (probably because of the annotations). I love the options for annotations and page-by-page reading, but there are times when a reader would prefer to read th... more

We have now created a single-page view that loads by default -- primarily because it also means we can have more reliable links to annotations from the dashboard. You can, of course, still switch to the multi-page reading view if you prefer! Note that this view will be read-only.

Add a flag for project owners who are actively looking for editors, readers, etc.

Having to create a post in the forum seems like an unnecessary step. Some potential editors might not think to look there.

    Status: completed

You can now do this on your project page in a section dedicated to looking for people. Look for it in the right column near the bottom of the page. Note that your project cannot be private and must be viewable to Book Oven users.

include style (mechanics, spelling) information as well as context

Does this text use the serial comma? UK or US spellings? What dictionary was used as spelling authority? Should numbers be spelled out always or only below ten? That sort of thing.

Or perhaps include a link to a page for each book where a proofreader (or copy editor) could note choices to be ma... more

    Add Editorial Guidelines

Let authors add information about how they'd like their work edited, e.g. pointing out unique words, asking for level of editing.

allow me to just say a clippet is not clear

    Status: completed

hi thanks for the note... one feature we're considering is adding a small messaging feature so that you can leave a note about snippets...so that would allow you to note that something was unclear, and explain what the problem was... it's in the "we'd like to have" bucket at the moment....

in the mean time "skip" might serve that purpose?

have two fields for the proofreader: one for correcting the snippet and one for a query or comment.

If the editing field should be used for both, then I'd suggest the instructions be clarified.

    ASPX template error

fix the browse page - the aspx is rendering a template error

    Status: completed

    Thanks Sara!

This was caused by some new data in our system (e.g. a new project that just got created) which generated some errors. It's now fixed.

We're also looking into ways to make sure we can catch these kinds of problems as they happen.

Indicate on multi-author books who created each chapter

On Ben Dyer's project, where we're each taking one chapter, it's impossible to see who started a specific chapter either on the project page or on the chapter page. It would be very useful indeed to be able to see this info.

It's possible to add multiple authors to a book for the moment, and now for separate chapters.

Make the contextual text in Bite-Size Edits darker

At the moment, the contextual text above and below the Bite-Size Edits text box is very pale gray, and it's hard to read if you don't have sharp eyesight. It needs to be darker.

Have clearer instructions for Bite-Size Edits

Currently the "tips" dialogue box that is shown when you arrive at Bite-Size Edits is very brief. It might be useful to have a more detailed overlay that shows how the interface works at a glance, perhaps including a diagram.

Have an onboarding, tutorial for new registrants

When I 1st sign up I should be given the tour and hand held. Show me where to go and what to do. Show me some examples so I can see what to do.

    Status: completed

Yes, this is important. I'd thought about doing an overlay that gives people an at-a-glance intro to how bite-size works, but we could do that and do a more comprehensive tour (so people who are impatient get the info about Bite Size but don't have to go through the whole tour).

There seem to be a lot of spacing errors?

Some words seem to have had the space between them removed?
Could this be caused by a glitch in the upload process..? A lot of proofer-fixed errors so far seem to be of the format:

"andMr." changed to "and Mr." (where andMr doesn't appear in the PG version of the text.)
    ... more

    Status: completed

This has been fixed a little while back, so if you're seeing this, it was because the text was put through Bite-Size Edits before the fix was implemented. It shouldn't be occurring with newer texts, but unfortunately we are stuck with at least a couple of Gutenberg books with this issue.

Do we need Done For Now?

In usability testing, no one seemed to use "Done for now" at the end of a session. Do we need to formally end a session or can we use period of inactivity instead?
